José Mariano Gago (1948-2015)

José Mariano Gago, was Minister, Scientist but above all the Man that had the ambition to place the Portuguese science in the map.

He believed that Science and Technology were a common good for the citizens. He believed that knowledge and the qualification of the Portuguese citizens were the highest investment of the country.

His vision, innovative thinking, inspiration and firm convictions shifted paths and Portugal witnessed an evolution, I would say revolution, never seen in the Science and Higher Education areas.

He had a clear vision of what was necessary to change in Higher Education along with political changes and the measures to ensure that a real reform and modernization of Higher Education could be set up.

Certainly one of the most brilliant people I have ever known.

A tremendous loss, but a source of inspiration.

He left too soon, and the best tribute is to keep alive his work.
